PortaOne today announced it has completed interoperability testing between its PortaBilling BSS (Business Support System) and the BFX Interface Gateway from BroadForward, a leader in internetworking solutions for mobile, WiFi and other communications networks. Through its interop with BFX, PortaBilling can now serve as an Online Charging System (OCS) on mobile networks built on CDMA, the prevalent North American standard, including the Sprint network in the USA.

PortaOne’s PortaBilling BSS is used by telecom operators, mobile networks and mobile service resellers in countries the world over. The software combines service management and customer provisioning with a carrier-grade billing system that delivers online charging, rating and invoicing. As an integrated solution, PortaBilling allows users to manage and bill for multiple services including those managed by third-party network elements, grouping charges for separate services on a single bill.

The interoperability of PortaBilling with BroadForward’s BFX Interface Gateway is a major operational advantage for mobile networks operating under the CDMA standard. The BFX Gateway, one of the fastest growing products in the signaling world, is designed to simplify network integration and service enablement through GUI-based service orchestration. It offers a multitude of functions including routing, any-to-any interworking, mediation, protocol conversion, load balancing, and advanced service logic. Networks supported by BFX include 3G, 4G/LTE, IMS, fixed, WiFi, Number Portability and M2M (machine-to-machine).

Interop testing between PortaBilling and BFX was performed as part of a three-way relationship between PortaOne, BroadForward, and Peerless Network, a major Chicago-based provider of services to MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators), many of which use CDMA.

Working together, PortaBilling and BFX Interface Gateway opens advanced OCS services to many MVNEs and MVNOs in North America. Through its ability to manage multiple services through a single interface, PortaBilling makes it easier to perform real-time online charging for data/voice and SMS, offer flexible rating options, bundle services, provide prepaid/postpaid customer support, and much more.

The combination of BFX and PortaBilling gives Peerless Networks and its MVNO customers, as well as other mobile telecoms, a high degree of flexibility. Not only can these operators take advantage of the versatility PortaBilling provides, but through BFX they can perform BSS services across a broad range of 3GPP and non-3GPP networks.
