WTL and PortaOne Connect to Provide a Combined SS7 to VoIP / Billing and Switching Solution

Internet telephony service providers will benefit from a joint offer of WTL’s SS7 to VoIP gateway and PortaOne’s softswitch and billing software
Wireless Technology Labs

Coquitlam, British Columbia and Brussels, Belgium, September 6, 2007 – WTL and PortaOne are pleased to announce today the successful completion of interoperability testing of their products. Testing was done between WTL’s SoIP product (a scaleable SS7 to VoIP Media and Signaling Gateway) and PortaSwitch, PortaOne’s IP Multimedia Subsystem that consists of a Class 5 softswitch, billing and provisioning solution, and unified messaging application.

As a result both companies will list the other as a reference solution and will take part in joint marketing activities. The newly announced co-operation means that customers can now confidently combine the industry-leading switching capabilities of WTL with the unique range of subscriber features supported by PortaSwitch.

Telecom operators need to offer their subscribers more and more sophisticated sets of features to attract and retain them, It makes network design sense to separate these from the underlying switching core. Fundamental network functions such as call authentication, call routing and carrier interconnect, SS7 signaling and CDR generation will continue to be handled by the WTL switch. End-user features like caller-ID, call waiting, 3-way calling, follow-me, voice mail, unified messaging, a whole range of IPPBX and, of course, carrier grade billing will be offered by PortaOne. WTL equipment has always been known for it’s higher than average reliability and enormous flexibility and this can now be matched by an application hosting environment to match.

PortaOne and WTL have a couple of joint customers already so it made sense to formalize the relationship. We have always made clear that we do not offer Class 5 features on our switches but we will interwork with the best-of-breed solutions in the market. This agreement means that our customers can deploy the added-value services they need for their residential and business customers knowing that this is a proven combination of technologies.

Simon Pearson, Business Development Director of WTL

We recognized that WTL had a lot to offer in the area of linking the legacy, TDM telecom world to the VoIP world and many of our customers need this. WTL customers will also benefit from this agreement – it is going to make it a lot easier for them to launch new services. We have a claim that a new customer can launch residential IP service with calls from IP phones, ATAs and softphones in a matter of days.
