What does MVNO stand for?

MVNO stands for mobile virtual network operator. MVNOs sell a wide variety of mobile telecommunications services by leasing access to a network run by a licensed MNO, or mobile network operator. Get our checklist for launching a new MVNO.

MNOs (or Mobile Network Operators) own and operate extensive physical infrastructure for delivering mobile communications: base stations, antennas, and so on. MVNOs, or mobile virtual network operators, do not own this type of infrastructure but instead lease access to it from their local MNO.

An MVNO reseller, sometimes referred to as a “skinny” MVNO, negotiates with an MNO or MVNO for cheaper rates on telecom or IoT services and then re-sells those services under its own brand. This can be a very affordable way to launch a new MVNO as you don’t need to manage any infrastructure – your main focus is on staying nimble and capturing the attention of your specific customer base.
